Black Velvet

Black Velvet are an all female acapella ensemble who first came together in August 2013.  In the beginning we really just met for fun, to sing and harmonise some of our favourite songs, and were perhaps a little inspired by the movie Pitch Perfect.  We almost instantly realised that we shared similar musical tastes and were really excited by exploring more contemporary acapella singing together.

Although we all share a love of the barbershop four part harmony we sing as members of the award winning Forth Valley Chorus, what sets us apart from this is the fact that we are a trio.  We knew when we first started singing together that our harmonies were tight, and that we blended together so well, we had to take ourselves seriously and realise our potential.  We mainly sing our own arrangements, which is great fun, with endless possibilities but it can sometimes be a a bit of a challenge.  It is however made somewhat easier by the fact that all members of Black Velvet are talented musicians as well as singers.

Rosalind is the arranger of Black Velvet's repertoire. She openly admits to spending most of her time arranging for the trio as well as a variety of other groups, including Forth Valley Chorus, The Edinburgh Police Choir and The Rolling Hills Chorus, of which she has been the Musical Director since September 2016. She has been singing a cappella since she was a teenager and began her barbershop career singing in Phoenix Chorus, near where she grew up, and the LABBS Youth Chorus. Rosalind loves all things barbershop and a cappella and has a wonderful ear for harmony singing, which is probably why in the chorus she sings Baritone. Rosalind also sings Lead in Element Quartet. She has been on the management team of the chorus in the past, along with being part of the vocal warm-up team. In February 2018, Rosalind had the honour of serving on the judging panel for the ICCA UK quarterfinal. In "real life" she has an MA (hons) in Linguistics from the University of Edinburgh and currently works as a Property Manager for a small family run firm in the New Town.

Kate is the Assistant Manager at a prestigious Edinburgh String Instrument specialists.  With a degree in Music Technology from the University of Edinburgh, she has a wealth of musical knowledge, arranging and performance experience and all this on top of a belter of a lead voice! An Edinburgh native, Kate joined Forth Valley in the winter of 2012.  While studying, Kate was actively involved in a rock gospel choir, so her talents were instantly recognised at chorus and she also quickly became part of the vocal warm-up team and was invited to join the Music Team at the end of 2017. Kate loves to use social media to share with the rest of the group what's new in the world of acapella, often providing us with inspiration for our own new ideas and arrangements.

Carole-Anne moved to Edinburgh from the North East of Scotland to study music at Napier University in 1999.  Nowadays Carole-Anne is a Children's Social Worker who loves to do all things musical in her spare time.  She enjoys playing piano and singing whenever she gets the chance, and is very much the “mother” of the group.  You could say, she always looks after the welfare of the trio and is an organisational master! Her sweet tenor tones compliment the Black Velvet sound perfectly and she has an innate talent for singing a cappella.

Black a Velvet are building an exciting and eclectic repertoire of original acapella arrangements. Please see our facebook page here: for updates on performances!
