Black Velvet

Black Velvet are an all female acapella ensemble who first came together in August 2013.  In the beginning we really just met for fun, to sing and harmonise some of our favourite songs, and were perhaps a little inspired by the movie Pitch Perfect.  We almost instantly realised that we shared similar musical tastes and were really excited by exploring more contemporary acapella singing together.

Although we all share a love of the barbershop four part harmony we sing as members of the award winning Forth Valley Chorus, what sets us apart from this is the fact that we are a trio.  We knew when we first started singing together that our harmonies were tight, and that we blended together so well, we had to take ourselves seriously and realise our potential.  We mainly sing our own arrangements, which is great fun, with endless possibilities but it can sometimes be a a bit of a challenge.  It is however made somewhat easier by the fact that all members of Black Velvet are talented musicians as well as singers.

Rosalind is a student at the University of Edinburgh in her final year studying Linguistics.  Rosalind is an extremely talented musician and the lead arranger of all Black Velvet's repertoire.  Rosalind openly admits to spending most of her time arranging for the trio along with being the secretary for Edinburgh University Music Society. She has been singing a cappella for almost 7 years now, having begun her barbershop career singing with her Mum in Phoenix Chorus; Cambridge where she grew up.  Rosalind loves all things barbershop, and has a wonderful ear for harmony singing, which is probably why in the chorus she sings baritone.  Rosalind has been on the management team of the chorus in the past, along with being part of the vocal warm-up team.

Kate is the Assistant Manager at a prestigious Edinburgh String Instrument specialists.  With a degree in Music Technology from the University of Edinburgh, she has a wealth of musical knowledge, arranging and performance experience and all this on top of a belter of a lead voice! An Edinburgh native, Kate joined Forth Valley in the winter of 2012.  While studying, Kate was actively involved in a rock gospel choir, so her talents were instantly recognised at chorus and she also quickly became part of the vocal warm-up team.  Kate loves to use social media to share with the rest of the group what's new in the world of acapella, often providing us with inspiration for our own new ideas and arrangements.

Carole-Anne moved to Edinburgh from the North East of Scotland to study music at Napier University in 1999.  Nowadays Carole-Anne is a Children's Social Worker who loves to do all things musical in her spare time.  She enjoys playing piano and singing whenever she gets the chance, and is very much the “mother” of the group.  You could say, she always looks after the welfare of the trio and is an organisational master! Her sweet tenor tones compliment the Black Velvet sound perfectly and she has an innate talent for singing a cappella.

Black a Velvet are building an exciting and eclectic repertoire of original acapella arrangements. Please see our facebook page here: www.facebook.com/blackvelvettrio for updates on performances!
