About our directorIMG 8813 David Denver 2013

David Sangster is the Master Director of Forth Valley Chorus and has directed us since June 2005. In nearly 10 years with the chorus he has transformed our repertoire (he even arranges music for us!) and has helped us to shine in our annual competition, taking us above the magical "600 points" mark in 2007 and keeping us there ever since, leading to wins in the 2009, 2011 and 2013 regional competitions!

David has an extremely musical background. He has loved harmony for as long as he can remember always singing a third above the tune as a child (no wonder he usually ends up singing tenor!) but his first direct contact with Barbershop was when his wife, Linda Carson, first joined Forth Valley. Through friends in the chorus and their husbands and sons he was invited to join his first quartet and quickly fell in love with close harmony singing and the barbershop style.

He attended the Sweet Adelines International Convention in Reno in 1994 and was blown away by the top choruses and quartets. He made a point of attending various master classes and workshops and began absorbing furiously.

In 1995 he coached Forth Valley quartet Sound Sensation in preparation for their win at the 1995 UK Convention and travelled with them to New Orleans for the International Convention. He has been coaching various quartets ever since and has arranged many songs for both his own quartets and female quartets as well as eight part work for both.

In addition to his involvement in the world of Barbershop, David is a pianist and has a Diploma from the Guildhall School of Music and Drama (for piano teaching and performance) as well as the usual grades. He studied music at Aberdeen University and played viola in the orchestra and string ensemble as well as singing in the choir.

He has attended the Headington Music School near Oxford and received master classes in both singing (solo and choral) and piano accompaniment and has worked with many singers (as accompanist) in the Edinburgh Fringe, St Giles at 6 series, Peebles Arts Festival and others as well as teaching piano in his "spare" time. He has some experience of the traditional Scottish music scene having played for some years in a tourist show in Edinburgh's Royal Mile and gained a feel for jazz and swing when working with Craig McMurdo, That Swing Thang and the Swingettes (of which Linda is a member) assisting with learning, coaching and occasional adaptation of the vocal arrangements. He also sang backing vocals with Edinburgh-based jazz singer Edith Budge with eight part group High on Harmony.

He has worked with local teacher and voice coach Marion McNeill who coaches cast members in touring West End productions ,accompanying for music theatre repertoire but also singing and acting.

David is a full time solicitor and lives in Edinburgh with Linda and their two children who are now well used to the fact that it's not just Mum who goes to "the Chorus".
